Get the board and the cable

• The Chessconnect Adapter is build upon a piece of hardware that is cheap and easily available. This is the esp32-s3-devkitc-1 board. You can buy one of this boards at the (online) electronic store of your choice or any of the large online market platforms like for instance Amazon or AliExpress. Just search for esp32-s3-devkitc-1. But please make sure that it looks like the picture below and has two USB-C ports.
  
• Then you need a USB-C OTG adapter with power input to connect the adapter to your DGT board while simultaneously powering both of them. My DGT board has a USB-C socket, so my Y-cable has two USB-C plugs for the chessboard and the adapter plus a third plug for power input. If your chess board has a mini- or micro-USB socket you will need to take that into account.
  

Flash the Chessconnect firmware onto the board

• Flash the Chessconnect firmware onto the Esp32 board by following these steps:
  • Hold the BOOT button while connecting the ESP32 via USB to your computer. Release the BOOT button after connecting. The ESP32 is now in download mode.
  • Click the „Connect“ button below and follow the instructions to select your serial port and upload the firmware.
  • Once the firmware has been successfully uploaded, disconnect and reconnect the ESP32 to restart it normally. Important: On some systems the browser crashes after the firmware is flashed. This is unfortunate, but usually the flash is completed successfully and the adapter is ready to operate normally.
    
  • If the flashing hangs during „prepare“ try the following directly before pressing „Install“:
    • press and hold the „boot“ button on your ESP32 board
    • while still holding down the „boot“ button, press and release the „reset“ button
    • release the „boot“ button
      

Start playing

• Connect the adapter to your chess board and a power source. This can be a power bank, a USB power adapter, or simply your phone or tablet.
• In the Chessconnect options select DGT as your chess board and Bluetooth as the connection method.
• You are ready to play!
